Meet Tom
If I am in the office, I will get up earlier and be in before 8 to avoid traffic. If I’m home I’m quite often in front of my PC before 7:30 am and will work an hour before getting showered/dressed.
However, if I’m in the office I usually make a cup of tea and a bowl of porridge, I am usually the first in, so I enjoy the silence!
As IT Manager I am responsible for all the company’s IT infrastructure – this includes all our client-facing cloud services, our staff computers and a lot of things in between. There are many instances of turning things off and on again.
A typical day in the office varies. With our staff embracing a hybrid working environment since Covid, the first hour of the day can typically be set about ensuring staff can get access to services they require. During this time, I also tend to check that all client services are running smoothly and that backups/replications have run overnight correctly. The rest of the day is spent working on current projects and any incidents that might occur during the day.
I am a one-man department at this stage, but I am always working with every other department to ensure they can do their jobs with the tools required. I love all aspects of my job especially being hands-on and helping people out with problems.
If I’m in the office, I will typically go for a run during my lunch. This will be anywhere from 5-10 miles, depending on my mood.
When I get home my favourite thing to do is relax with my family and where possible, avoid looking at a computer screen!
My favourite book is Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, and my favourite film is Hot Fuzz. When it comes to music, I listen to a variety of different genres, but I am mostly influenced by the ’90s scene that shaped my teenage years.
